Portrait photography is all about taking photographs of a person, a group of people or animals. Portrait photography captures the personality of the subject in different moods and situations. Usually portrait photography is supported by various lightning effects, backdrops and outstanding poses. However, mostly portrait photography is an artistic presentation of a subject and its personality. Portrait photography can be divided into several separate styles.



Classical Traditional Portrait

Classical or traditional portrait photography, the photographer will mainly focus on the face ñ it is the predominant element of the taken image. The goal of the photographer is to portray the expression of the person. The person will be faced most likely directly towards the camera and be looking directly into the lens. This can be also described as head-shot portrait, two third portrait or full body portrait framing.

Candid Portrait

A candid portrait is regularly used for journalism, street photography, event photography or also travel photography. The photographer will mainly be take pictures without the subject even knowing it the photographer is taking a shot with-out a subject is expecting or acknowledging. Opposed to studio portrait photography the image is taken at the moment rather than set up and poses.

Environmental Portrait

The environmental portrait is usually taken in the natural environment of person and shows therefore a subject and the surrounding environment. A business portrait is most likely an environmental portrait, as it will show the subject in action and its natural habitat. The setting and pose is chosen by the photographer.

Glamour Portrait

Glamour portrait is a term to refers to a type of portrait where emphasis is given to underline the sexy romantic appeal of the person, mostly women. Glamour portrait photography has changed over time since it became popular style in France in the early 1900s. The style was long time associated to the French pinup postcards. It became even more popular in the early 1920s to glamourize the stature of american celebrities. In glamour portrait photography the model will take a still and erotic pose, generally in a composed scene from fully clothed to nude. Glamour portrait photography may can be a euphemism for erotic photography.

Lifestyle Portrait

When a portrait is giving emphasis to suggest a certain "style of living" it normally refers to the por-trait type "lifestyle portrait". Photographers regularly use this type of portrait photography in wedding photography, family photography, commercial photography or fine art photography to communicate of a certain experience and feeling. Lifestyle portraits do evoke emotions in viewers by depiction of a desired lifestyle or feeling. Lifestyle portraits are meant to suggest a style and has direct implications on several industries and therefore is used in fashion photography as well as editorial, pharmaceutical or food photography.

Surreal Portrait

Surrealism, an art movement started in the early 1920s, is a depiction of a persons interpreted subconscious mind. Surreal portraits are created to show the other reality and emphasise it. To create surreal portraits, photographers use several tools and tricks and add special effects during the editing process.

Conceptual Portrait

This style of portrait is often used in advertising photography to transmit a hidden message. The term conceptual portraits is used, when a concept is adding a fourth dimension to an image and leaves the viewer guessing and often is open for interpretation. This freedom of interpretation makes this style as interesting as confusing.

Abstract Portrait

Abstract portraits is art. The purpose of abstract portraits is not based on a realistic presentation of the person or subject and can appear in various forms and over several dimensions. Digital manipulation or collages are often used to achieve an abstract look.
